Why Is My Computer So Slow? 5 Simple Fixes

📅 April 28, 2026 ⏱ 4 min read

A slow computer is one of the most common problems we see every week. The good news is that most of the time, it is not a serious problem. Here are five simple things that can make a big difference.

Quick answer: A slow computer is often caused by too many programs starting up, missing updates, a full hard drive, too many browser tabs, or simply needing a restart. Try the steps below to speed it up.

Why This Happens

Computers slow down over time for many reasons. Programs and updates add up, files fill the hard drive, and your computer may not have had a fresh start in a while. These are normal and usually easy to fix.

Step-by-Step: 5 Simple Fixes

1. Too Many Programs Starting Up

Every time you turn on your computer, many programs start running in the background — even ones you never use. This slows everything down from the moment you press the power button.

What to do: You can stop programs from starting automatically. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, click the Startup tab, and disable any programs you don't need. On a Mac, go to System Settings > General > Login Items and remove unnecessary items. If this sounds tricky, we can do it for you during a home visit.

2. Your Computer Needs Updates

Microsoft and Apple regularly release updates that fix slowness and security problems. If your computer has not been updated in a while, it can start to drag. Updates are safe and important.

What to do: On Windows, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for updates. On a Mac, go to System Settings > General > Software Update. We always check for updates during every visit.

3. Not Enough Storage Space

When your hard drive gets too full, your computer slows down significantly. This is like trying to work at a desk covered in papers — there is just no room to do anything. Deleting old files and photos you do not need, or moving them to a backup drive, can speed things up dramatically.

What to do: Open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) and look for large files or folders you no longer need. Empty the Recycle Bin or Trash. If you're unsure, we can help you safely clean up.

4. Too Many Browser Tabs Open

Each tab in your web browser uses memory. If you have 10 or 20 tabs open, your computer is working very hard just to keep them all loaded. Try closing tabs you are not using.

What to do: Look at the top of your browser window. Click the small X on any tab you don't need. If you want to keep a page for later, bookmark it instead.

5. The Computer Just Needs a Restart

This sounds too simple, but it works. Many people leave their computer in sleep mode for weeks or months. A proper restart clears out everything and gives your computer a fresh start.

What to do: Click the Start button (Windows) or Apple menu (Mac), then choose Restart. Wait for the computer to turn off and back on. This can fix many slowdowns.

What If This Does Not Work?

If your computer is still slow after trying these steps, it could be a more serious issue like a virus, failing hardware, or a very full hard drive. Do not worry — we can help. Give us a call and we will come to your home to sort it out.
