My phone storage is full what do I do?

📅 May 6, 2026 ⏱ 3 min read

Is your phone telling you that storage is full? It can be very confusing and frustrating. You might feel stuck and not want to bother your family with yet another tech problem. You are not alone, and we can help you fix this step by step.

Quick Answer

Your phone storage is full because too many photos, videos, apps, or old messages are taking up space. The quickest fix is to delete things you do not need. You can also move your photos to a computer or the cloud (online storage). For most people, clearing out old photos and unused apps will free up plenty of room.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Open the Settings app. On an iPhone, it is a grey gear icon. On an Android phone, it looks like a gear or a wrench. Tap it to open.
  2. Tap on General or Storage. On an iPhone, tap General, then iPhone Storage. On Android, tap Storage or Device Care, then Storage. You will see a list of what is taking up space.
  3. Look for large items. Scroll through the list. You will see apps, photos, and messages. Look for items that use a lot of space, like Photos or Videos. Tap each one to see details.
  4. Delete unused apps. Tap any app you have not used in months. Tap Delete App or Uninstall. This removes the app and its data. You can always download it again later.
  5. Clear out old photos and videos. Open your Photos app. Look for blurry or duplicate pictures. Swipe up or tap the Trash icon to delete them. Also check your Recently Deleted folder and empty it.
  6. Delete old messages and attachments. Open your Messages app. Find conversations with many pictures or videos. Tap each message and delete the attachment. Or delete the whole conversation if it is old.
  7. Offload unused apps (iPhone only). On an iPhone, you can Offload an app. This keeps the app’s documents and data but removes the app itself. Later, if you tap the app icon, it will download again. This saves space without losing your information.
