How to Block Unwanted and Spam Phone Calls

📅 April 29, 2026 ⏱ 4 min read

If your phone keeps ringing with calls from numbers you don't recognize, you're not alone. Many people feel stuck—they don't want to Google endlessly and feel lost, and they don't want to keep asking their children or grandchildren for every little thing. But you don't have to put up with it. Blocking unwanted calls is simpler than you think, and you can do it right from your phone.

Quick answer: You can block unwanted calls by blocking individual numbers or by turning on a setting that sends unknown callers straight to voicemail. Both options are built into your phone and don't require any extra apps.

Why This Happens

Unwanted calls often come from automated systems (robots that dial numbers) or from people trying to sell you something. They find your number through public lists or by guessing. Your phone has built-in tools to stop most of them, and you don't need to download anything extra.

How to Block a Number on iPhone

  1. Open the Phone app (the green icon with a white phone).
  2. Tap Recents at the bottom to see your call history.
  3. Find the unwanted number and tap the blue "i" icon next to it.
  4. Scroll down and tap Block this Caller.
  5. Tap Block Contact to confirm.

How to Block a Number on Android

  1. Open the Phone app (usually a green or blue icon with a white phone).
  2. Tap Recents or Call History.
  3. Find the unwanted number and tap it.
  4. Tap Block / Report Spam (or the three dots menu, then Block number).
  5. Tap Block to confirm.

Once you block a number, that caller can no longer reach you. They'll hear a busy signal or a message that the number is not in service.

Silence Unknown Callers Automatically

You don't have to block each number one by one. Your phone can send all calls from unknown numbers straight to voicemail.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Settings (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down and tap Phone.
  3. Tap Silence Unknown Callers.
  4. Toggle the switch to ON (green).

This sends calls from numbers not in your contacts to voicemail. If it's important, they can leave a message.

On Android:

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap the three dots (top right corner) and select Settings.
  3. Tap Caller ID & Spam (or Spam and Call Screen).
  4. Turn on See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls.
