How to Send Photos to Family from Your Phone

📅 April 29, 2026 ⏱ 5 min read

You have a photo on your phone that you want to share with your daughter across town or your grandson in another province. Maybe you’ve tried to send it before and got stuck, or you don’t want to keep calling your son for help every time. You’re not alone—many people feel the same way. The good news is that sending photos is simpler than it looks. Here’s how to do it, step by step.

Quick answer: To send a photo, open your Messages app, tap the compose button, enter the person's name or number, tap the camera or plus icon, select the photo, and tap Send. You can also use email or apps like WhatsApp.

Why This Happens

Sharing photos is a wonderful way to stay connected with family. But phones have many buttons and menus, and it can be confusing to find the right one. The steps are actually the same on most phones, so once you learn them, you can send photos anytime.

Send a photo using text message (SMS)

This is the most common way to share photos. It works on almost any phone, and the person on the other end doesn’t need a special app.

  1. Open your Messages or Text app. It usually looks like a speech bubble or an envelope.
  2. Tap the compose button (often a pencil or plus sign).
  3. Type the person’s name or phone number in the “To” field.
  4. Look for a camera icon or a plus (+) icon near the text box. Tap it.
  5. Select Photos or Gallery from the menu that appears.
  6. Tap the photo you want to send. A checkmark will appear on it.
  7. Tap Send or the paper airplane icon.

That’s it. The photo will travel as a text message. The person you sent it to can save it to their own phone by tapping and holding on it.

Send a photo using email

Email is handy if you want to send several photos at once, or if the person prefers email over text.

  1. Open your Email app (like Gmail, Outlook, or Mail).
  2. Tap the compose button (usually a pencil or a square with a plus).
  3. Enter the person’s email address in the “To” field.
  4. Add a short subject line, like “Photos from today.”
  5. Look for a paperclip icon or a plus (+) icon at the bottom of the screen. Tap it.
  6. Select Attach file or Photos.
  7. Tap the photos you want to send. You can select multiple by tapping each one.
  8. Tap Done or Attach.
  9. Tap the Send button (usually an arrow).

Tip: If you’re sending many photos, email may be faster than texting.

Send a photo using a messaging app (like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger)

These apps are popular because they’re free and work over Wi-Fi. The other person needs the same app installed on their phone.

  1. Open the app (for example, WhatsApp).
  2. Find the person’s name in your chat list, or tap the new chat button.
  3. Tap the camera icon or the plus (+) icon next to the text box.
  4. Select Photos & Videos or Gallery.
  5. Tap the photo you want. You can also tap multiple photos.
  6. Tap the Send button (usually a paper airplane or a checkmark).

What If This Does Not Work?

If the photo won’t send, check that you have a good internet connection. Make sure Wi-Fi is on or mobile data is enabled. If you’re using a messaging app, confirm the other person has the same app. If you still have trouble, try restarting your phone.
